Beginning with the 2015/2016 school year, our junior high students will participate in a chosen elective each week changing electives quarterly. Study Skills for 7th Grade and Financial Literacy in 8th Grade is a requirement for at least one of the quarters.
The offered electives will complement the skills that students need daily to succeed. Electives will take place on the same day each week and will change every grading period (nine weeks). An elective may not be repeated within the same year. Electives will be graded on an effort scale similar to the one on the report card.

Course Name: 7th Grade SJS News Team
Experience the excitement of broadcast news! Students will learn all aspects of producing a live
news show for St. Joseph School. Positions covered include: Producer, Reporter, Anchor, Writer, and Technicians. The team will be responsible for creating a show to be broadcast to the entire SJS community. Students must complete this class to be considered for the 8th grade news team the following year.
Course Name: 7th Grade Intro to Theatre:
Course Description: Students will develop a love and appreciation of the theatre. Classes are structured to provide the student a basis in theatre vocab and skills, while providing a creative outlet. Students will learn the fundamentals of building characters, scene work, and monologue skills throughout the course.
Course Name: 7th and 8th Grade Public Speaking:
“How to talk, and not just be heard,but actually have people listen!”
This class will present tips and essential information for speaking to large and small groups. We will be examining the mechanics of public speaking, or oratory, and practice a variety of different types of public addresses; including lecturing at church, humorous presentations,
inspirational speaking, making factual presentations, and a glimpse at “Roberts
Rules of Order”, the bible of group speaking. Stand up and be heard, while enjoying the
challenge of developing a lifelong skill.
Course Name: 7th and 8th Grade Latin American Culture:
In this class, the students will learn about Latin American cultural traditions, including food,
music, history, art, dance and idioms. We will focus on the “melting pot” of backgrounds which
has helped form today’s countries.
